Country Blues Collector Items (1928-1933) came out in 1989 on the Story of the Blues label. It allows you to listen in on six different Georgia-and-Tennessee-based bluesmen through a series of historic Columbia, Champion, and Brunswick recordings which have only been reissued on a handful of other collections. Billy Bird sang in a very old-fashioned, folksy manner, and his "Alabama Blues" is very similar to both Jim Jackson's "I'm Gonna Move to Louisiana" and Papa Eggshell's "Goin' Up the Country." Eggshell, otherwise known as Lawrence Casey, also made records with St. Louis barrelhouse pianist Henry Brown and his trombone-wielding cohort Ike Rodgers. Those excellent recordings may be found on Document's St. Louis Barrelhouse Piano (1929-1934). "Too Tight" Henry Lee Castle was a member of the Beale Street Rounders. He emits a high-lonesome sound to evoke the cry of the "squinch" or screech owl. His patter and string technique during "Charleston Contest" sounds a lot like that of Memphis banjoist and jug band leader Gus Cannon. The harmonica player heard with Henry was probably Jed Davenport. "Humming Blues" is this collection's sole offering by pianist James "Bat" Robinson (aka the Hummingbird) whose recorded works are more thoroughly represented on Document's Piano Blues, Vol. 1 (1927-1936). The banjoist heard with Robinson is believed to have been Ed Hudson. The Country Blues Collector Items anthology contains all of pianist Troy Ferguson's originally issued works. These consist of a mellow waltz ("Good Night"), a blues and two lively bits of hokum which (like much of the music heard on this collection) are essentially the same song recorded in two installments with slightly different lyrics. Discographers indicate that Ferguson's guitarist was named Jesse Thomas (almost certainly not the Dallas-based musician by the same name) and that the speaking voice heard on "College Blues" was that of an "unknown white A&R man." In April 1936, Ferguson also recorded with a guitarist named Charlie Manson, but like fully half of Ferguson's output, those records weren't released. Guitarist Archie Lewis, who also performed under the name of Handy Archie, was the source of "Miss Handy Hanks," the 18th and final track on this useful compilation. It was one of three sides he cut for Champion on the last day of March 1933. One of those efforts, simply titled "Chicken," remained unissued. The flipside of "Miss Handy Hanks," "Honey, 'low Me One More Chance" was given its definitive treatment by Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas when he recorded it for Vocalion in October 1927. Note that the first eight tracks on this collection (by Billy Bird and Too Tight Henry) also appear on Document's Rare Country Blues Vol.3 (1928-1936).
