Cuando la joven mestiza Fauna Hodel (India Eisley) descubre que nada más nacer fue entregada en adopción por su madre biológica a un hombre de color que trabajaba en los baños de un casino de Nevada en 1949, la chica se propone conocer a su familia biológica. Cuando comienza a investigar, la principal pista que tiene la lleva a contactar con el Dr. George Hodel, un hombre involucrado en el más oscuro desenfreno de Hollywood y sospechoso del infame asesinato "Black Dahlia" de Elizabeth Short, en Los Ángeles en 1947. Además el camino de Fauna se cruzará con el de Jay Singletary (Chris Pine), un reportero que investigó en el pasado el caso sin resolver y que ahora acepta cualquier trabajo que le permita sobrevivir.
